Tēnā koutou, Welcome to the official website of Te Reo-o-Taranaki, a Charitable Trust formed to manage and co-ordinate a strategic direction for the regeneration and continued development of Taranaki reo ... the indigenous Reo (Regional Māori language variation/dialect) associated with Taranaki. This strategic direction seeks to lay down a foundation to revitalise and highlight the regional importance of our reo with a strong focus towards social and cultural development. The formation of Te Reo-o-Taranaki under some of the prominent old people of the time, came about in the early 1980's to respond to and drive efforts towards revitalising the 'reo' within our communities. 20 years on and this is still the focus! We are driven by the fact that in order for our reo to thrive in this current environment, there needs to be emphasis on inter-generational transmission within the home, whānau and community. It is our local languages that hold the key to a deeper understanding and knowledge of who we are. If this could take place, then our identity and mere essence as descendants and residents of Taranaki will be sustained for future generations. Although our primary outcome is to regenerate and strengthen inter-generational transmission, we are also quick to realise that language revitalisation strategies do not work in isolation, together they make a total language environment. All areas are part of an inter-related whole. There can be no single strategy - it requires a multi-faceted approach. Our vision is; "TUKU REO, TUKU MOURI" (Language, Culture, Crossing Generations) Our mission to achieve this will take on developing and supporting four major strategies for language development:
